The North Central Massachusetts Chamber of Commerce and its affiliate organizations primarily serve a diverse region encompassing twenty-seven communities: Ashburnham, Ashby, Athol, Ayer, Barre, Clinton, Devens, Fitchburg, Gardner, Groton, Harvard, Hubbardston, Lancaster, Leominster, Lunenburg, Orange, Pepperell, Petersham, Phillipston, Princeton, Royalston, Shirley, Sterling, Templeton, Townsend, Westminster, and Winchendon.

Through our affiliate organizations, we extend additional economic development services to communities across Worcester and Middlesex Counties. These expanded services include small business lending, technical assistance, health insurance, marketing support, and other resources to foster regional cooperation and support our wider economic ecosystem.

Regional Impact

North Central Massachusetts represents a vibrant economic region of approximately 275,000 residents, distinguished by its diverse business landscape and strong industrial heritage. Our Chamber serves as the voice of more than 700 member businesses and organizations that collectively employ over 47,000 people.

The region’s economic strength is anchored in its robust manufacturing sector, particularly in plastics, pharmaceuticals, and biomedical devices, alongside growing healthcare and tourism industries. This diverse economy is complemented by our rich agricultural heritage, with farms and agricultural businesses continuing to play an important role in our regional identity and economy.

Our economic development and business support initiatives provide tangible results. We have provided over $27 million in small business loans since 1996, creating or retaining nearly 2,000 jobs and leveraging $42 million in additional funding. Working collaboratively with state and local economic development partners, we’ve helped attract employers to the region, contributing to thousands of new jobs and millions in new tax revenue. We’ve also achieved significant wins for our manufacturing sector, facilitating millions in energy savings and securing critical infrastructure improvements. Our marketing efforts have helped grow direct visitor spending from $14.3 million in 20024 to over $500 million by 2023, while supporting over 4,300 jobs.

As the region’s most effective business advocate, we’ve secured millions in funding for small business recovery, defeated harmful tax proposals, and championed policy changes to make our communities more competitive and spur economic growth and a stronger quality of life in the region. Our commitment to workforce development is demonstrated through strategic research and action. We’ve invested more than $1 million in scholarships, while our WorkNorthCentral.com platform has facilitated more than 12,800 job postings since launch. We have also brought together key stakeholders to address workforce challenges in the region.
